Is your car a toxic trap?

Many of us treat our cars like second homes, but with one major difference—we wouldn’t let our homes get that filthy. Decomposing food under seats, dirty pets sharing space with groceries, small children doing ‘what small children do’. Unwittingly, we’re turning the insides of our cars into breeding grounds for all kinds of unsavoury bacteria, and in some cases we’re opening ourselves up to serious risk. In our video feature, Dr Anthony Hilton gets inside some of Britain’s commonest types of cars and examines them in microbiological detail. He and his team at Aston University took samples from the areas inside our cars that are most often used or handled—steering wheels, gear sticks, rear seats—and subjected them to rigorous microscopic examination. What they found wasn’t pretty; in one case even discovering traces of the E-coli virus. Cleaning the car might seem like a pain, but once you’ve witnessed Dr Hilton’s fascinating exposé of its unwanted hidden passengers, you might well be inclined to think again about giving it a quick once over with an antibacterial wipe or two. Redefining ‘Mandom’: What maketh the man?

Man-bags and moisturisers are redefining modern-day masculinity, 60% of modern day men proudly claim to be masters of the steam iron but only 10% consider themselves to be handy under the bonnet of a car. All this is a far cry from the men in the 1920s and 1940s, 73% of whom considered themselves car-savvy. Only a quarter knew how to turn the iron on though! ‘The Brylcreem Mandom Report 2008’ shows the 21st Century man is somewhat self-obsessed spending an average 26% longer in front of the mirror than men in the 1940s. Men are also currently much more in touch with their emotional side with 85% claiming they wouldn’t be ashamed to cry in front of others. In the 1920s however, 40% of men said they would be ashamed to cry in front of others. The report interviewed men from 18 to over 80 and clearly shows a great shift in both male attitudes and behaviour. With over 61% of those under 29 admitting they don’t consider themselves masculine today, it’s clear we’ve reached a ball-breaking time. Domestic and public boundaries have blurred over the decades, causing confusion over where the masculine line is now drawn. Women want their men back, complaining that men have stepped a bit too far in the feminine direction. 60% of women aged between 18 and 29 say they would like the man to take control of their relationship. Two-thirds also say modern men aren’t as masculine as men from years gone by. Founding Editor of Loaded Magazine James Brown comments: “Masculinity is best defined by a focus on competitiveness, strength and rationality, yet The Brylcreem Mandom Report 2008 indicates that modern men have become far more openly emotional, are more focused on image and appearance, and are increasingly taking on notions more often associated with women.” Watch here to watch Jerri Bryne see what the people on the street have to say... British women will be spring-cleaning a lot more than their cupboards this year as 79% admit their lives are far too cluttered. 3 in 5 say part of the clutter is unwanted friends with nearly a third saying they had 5 friends or more they wouldn’t mind never seeing again. Maybe we should be more selective about who we add on Facebook? The research, conducted by confectioners Ricola, shows women are no better when it comes to their handbags or their homes. Nearly half (47%) have missed calls on their mobiles because they can’t find the phone in their handbag before the other person has rung off. Considering a quarter keep 15 or more items in their handbags at any one time this is hardly surprising! A further 78% admit their homes are cluttered with junk and although 68% plan to de-clutter their homes and their handbags, they never quite get round to it. If this is all sounding a bit too familiar, don’t panic! Simply click below to watch this exclusive video where TV psychologist Anjula Mutanda explains how to de-clutter your handbag and your life. By clearing out the old you can make room for the new. For more information visit www.winwithricola.com
